Notes: A native of South Carolina, Charles Woodward Hutson initially followed in his father's footsteps and studied to be a lawyer. He gave up his legal career and taught Greek at Louisiana State University and other southern universities. Upon his retirement, Hudson moved to New Orleans and became an artist. Favoring pastels and watercolor, his lack of formal art education appears to have given him a sense of freedom in terms of style and approach. In 1931 at the age of 91, Hudson had a one-man show of his work at the Delgado Museum of Art (today NOMA). His work was included in Sidney Janis' landmark folk art book They Taught Themselves: American Primitive Painters of the 20th Century.
