Chinese Carved Mother-of-Pearl Shell Frame, 19th century, monogrammed in an oval cartouche surrounded by an intricately carved village scene, surrounding a Japanese painted miniature on bone, miniature inscribed mid-right edge, 9-1/8" x 9-1/2". A shell of similar decoration to this one is part of a pair in the Museum Victoria, Melbourne, Australia.


  • Condition: A few naturally occurring anomalies on the shell, including some small holes and areas of brownish color along the bottom edge. A few minor nicks and abrasions including one possible indentation along the top edge of the frame. Light patination to the metal rim . On the miniature, some light overall fading and an area of about 1" with what appears to be inpainting. No significant losses or restoration to the frame. Wear is consistent with age, material and display.
