Pair of Rare Chinese Export Armorial Chargers in the Famille Vert Palette, first quarter 18th century, decorated with the Arms of Harrison impaling Bray, from a service made for Edward Harrison of Balls Park, Hertfordshire (1674-1732), the carefully detailed green, orange and gilt borders decorated with peonies and phoenix birds, dia. 15". Provenance: The Estate of Elaine Smith Frost White, Houston, Texas and East Hampton, New York.

  • Condition: Both chargers present very well, with frontal wear commensurate with 300 years of age. There is some difference to wear on the armorial crests. First example: The charger with more wear shows mostly yellow underpainting. It has a repaired hairline running inward from the edge to the dished portion, but stopping before the flat portion. An associated second section of the rim has been repainted. Second example: Shows mostly gray on the right side of the crest and has three areas of overspray repair, mostly visible from the back. Two of these have hair cracks visible from the back, each showing a 2" hair crack confined to the rim. There is a third, smaller area of overspray, with no obvious damage, but clearly something was hidden. On the front, about a 2" section of rim was repainted within an area of overspray about 2" x 3".
