After Jacopo Amigoni
(Italian, ca. 1682-1752)

"Venus and Adonis (1739)", mid-18th century

oil on canvas
unsigned.
Framed.
38-1/2" x 53-1/4", framed 56-1/4" x 69-1/4"

Notes: A native Venetian, Jacopo Amigoni was a prolific painter of portraits and mythological scenes that received wide recognition across Europe. Demand for his work by the aristocracy yielded a lucrative market in England where Amigoni moved in 1729, perfecting "parlor scenes", such as this, which depicted large-scale works with sensuous deities and mythological figures in languor or sporting games for British estates and country homes. The subject of "Venus and Adonis" was particularly popular in the U.K. as the tale from Ovid's Metamorphoses was also adopted into poetry by Shakespeare, Constable and an opera by John Blow. This copy, contemporaneous with one of the artist's period, was likely executed by a follower or pupil of the artist.

Yellowing and darkening of varnish layer along with some blooming at upper left corner. Fairly thick layer of surface soiling. Evidence of past restoration: small areas of inpainting throughout including filler areas of more pronounced craquelure. Difficult for UV light to completely penetrate varnish layer in some areas of background. Verso with several old wax patches. Please see additional images. Frame with losses and old repairs.
