Circle of Van Dyck (Flemish/British, 1599-1641)

  • Condition: Overall yellowing and darkening of varnish layer as well as a layer of surface dirt. Scattered nicks and areas of abrading, especially along right edge where canvas meets the frame. Two spots of losses above the horse, bottom left and right corners. Small scratch to neck. Crease along the upper third of canvas with old repair. Evidence of past restoration but difficult for UV light to completely penetrate the varnish layer. Evidence of inpainting to the right hand, an L-shaped inpainting repair above proper left shoulder. Slight dimple with corresponding loss of paint (does not interfere with integrity of the canvas) in the lower portion of the canvas. Losses to paint and possible repair to mid-left edge. Canvas has been relined and there is evidence of several possible campaigns of restoration.
