  • Provenance: Acquired at Gresham Gallery, 718 Toulouse Street, New Orleans; descended in a New Orleans family.

Notes: In the 1930s and 1940s, New Orleans was marketed as "America's Most Interesting City" to attract tourists and locals to the French Quarter. Clarence Millet's painting St. Anthony's Garden and Orleans Street, French Quarter captures the coexistence of both the residential life and tourism in the French Quarter. Locals gather on the plant-filled cast iron balconies while the horse-drawn carriage provided the tourists with a glimpse of life in the 19th century.

Charles Gresham opened his Gresham Gallery next door to the New Orleans Art League located at 630 Toulouse Street in the old Governor Claiborne house. The building was divided into studios and included an art library, scenic courtyard, and gallery. The goal of the Art League was to provide a professional atmosphere where members could work, teach and exchange ideas and constructive criticism. Clarence Millet along with Morris Henry Hobbs, Knute Heldner, Weeks Hall and Gideon T. Stanton were active members. The Gresham Gallery represented many of the Art League artists.
