Clementine Hunter

(American/Louisiana, 1886-1988)

"Cotton Picker"

oil on canvas board
monogrammed upper mid right.
Framed.
6" x 7", framed 7-1/2" x 8-1/2"

  • Provenance: Notes: Since her childhood, picking cotton was part of Clementine Hunter's life. When she became a mother, Clementine would place her children under a nearby tree and tend to them as she finished picking a row of cotton. According to Clementine:

"I just let my head wander. I always feel close to the Lord when I'm picking. Because to pick the cotton, you don't have to think of how to do it, you just do it. So, that leaves my whole head to think of the Lord. I can pray, sing, do just about anything I want while I'm picking, and nobody could stop me, except them children."

Her depiction of a sole cotton picker could be seen as a self-portrait of the artist hard at work in the fields.
  • Condition: **No signs of past restorations. Light surface particularly visible in white sack and yellow background. Brown stain lower left (grass).
Modern frame with surface marks, nicks and abrasions.
