Provenance: Estate of Richard Anthony Goula, proceeds to benefit the Thistlewood Foundation, Lafayette, Louisiana.

Notes: Tiffany's multi-motif pattern depicting various birds was introduced originally in 1871 as the "Japanese" pattern at the height of the Aesthetic movement. Available with a wide variety of gilded and engraved enhancements - the Japanese influence on which can be seen in the two early pieces here - the pattern declined in popularity as the Japonaise fad waned and was discontinued sometime before 1904. It was later revived (with some modifications) on August 3, 1956 as the "Plantation" pattern, though it was quickly re-christened "Audubon" two months later, which it remains today.

  • Condition: **No appreciable condition issues noted on the flatware. The two older "Japanese" pieces each have some narrow dark bands on the stems from improper storage with rubber bands; this is removable with a minimally abrasive polish. Otherwise in quite good condition with nice detail and engraving. Each marked "M Tiffany & Co. Sterling Pat 1871". The later "Audubon" pieces show the higher polish and softer details associated with the re-issues; the detail is particularly soft on the demitasse spoons. There is some wear on the monogram blanks of the salad forks, but this appears to be wear and not monogram removal. These pieces marked (in the die) "Tiffany & Co. Sterling". The vase and napkin rings are silver electrotypes. The vase has a shallow 5/8" dent on the shoulder, and another shallow 1/2" dent at the base, but is in otherwise good condition, with some wear to the details from age and use. Marked (on the underside) "Tiffany & Co. / Sterling Silver / 925". The napkin rings are in good condition with no dents or breaks, but the details are quite soft and indistinct; each marked (on the outside edge) "Tiffany & Co. Sterling Silver 925".
