Continental Carved Mahogany Commode, mid-19th century, with earlier elements, of monumental proportions, the rectangular top above a case fitted with two small drawers over two long drawers, the whole elaborately carved in scrolling foliate, avian and figural designs, the sides with shield-carved panels, raised on lion masques ending in paw feet, h. 44-1/2", w. 72", d. 25-1/2".
- Condition: In overall very good condition. The piece exhibits minor finish abrasions, shrinkage and wear consistent with age and use. The top exhibits a straight shrinkage line where two boards are laminated together. There is some filler extending in from one end. When pressed on firmly, no movement at the joint was noted. The case is very tight and solid with no apparent looseness at the joints. Some very minor rubbing/flakes to edges of carved surfaces, but no notable losses to carving noted. The central drawer is presently locked. A key accompanied the piece, but does not fit properly. All other drawers retain what appears to be identical locksets.
