Copeland Majolica Figure of "Sloth and Mischief"

fourth quarter 19th century, English, after artist L. A. Malempre (British, 1820-1888), decorated in naturalistic tones, on a turquoise cushion, marked around the edges of the cobalt base, "Sloth and Mischief" on the front, "Malempre 50 1877" on the side, and "Copyright Reserved Copeland 77" on the rear.

  • Condition: **Wonderful image with rich color.
    A section (approx. 3") of the tail/"bridle" and the tortoise's rear neck with an old, professional restoration. A very small crack remains at the rear neck.
    There is a 3/8" x 1/8" old surface loss adjacent to one corner along with very scattered dings to the lower base edge.
    The glazed underside with a 3" diameter circular opening with two old, faint hairlines on either side (2-1/2" and 2-3/4"). A 1" faint hairline visible on the "membrane" where the tortoise's leg emerges from the shell.
    Otherwise, in excellent condition.
