platinum, the brooch mounted with round brilliant-cut diamonds weighing approximately 1.43 carats in total, and accented with a round-cut treated ruby for the eye, weighing approximately 0.01 carat in total. size 3/8" x 1-1-/4", total weight 8.0 grams

Notes: This brooch was commissioned by Alfred Blake Dick, Jr. (1894-1954) of Lake Forest, Illinois for his wife, Helen Aldrich Dick (1895-1987). Dick was the president of A.B. Dick Co., the largest manufacturer of mimeograph machines in the world which had been founded by his father. He met his wife when she was a child and would ride her pony by Westmoreland, the Dick estate. Their mutual love of horses would blossom at their Dicksfield Farms in Gurnee, Illinois, where they raised hackney ponies and dairy cows, winning numerous awards for both. This brooch is reportedly in the image of their pony "Pride of the Plains", a champion sire.
