(American/Arkansas, b. 1938)

"Steamin' Jeans", 1977

oil on shaped canvas
signed and dated "Donald Roller Wilson 1977 Sunday September 25 7:46 p.m." lower left.
51" x 144"

Provenance: Private collection, Houston, Texas.

Notes: "Chronologically arranged narrative progression, with each episode sharing a cockeyed similarity to our own personal episodes experienced during the madness of exercising our lives spent here on earth. If the paintings were to be reunited, brought together and presented one following the other in the sequence in which they were conceived, the effect would be that of a visual novel… a soap opera… consisting of snapshots assembled into "chapters"".
--Donald Roller Wilson

As this statement taken from Wilson's website clearly demonstrates, seriality and repetition are innate to the ontology of the artist, whose paintings are "snapshot" flashes of madness (or genius) in a much broader verse of being - "the party going on inside my [his] head!". Decades before monkeys abounded in the abyss of kitsch, the mundane, the repetitive every day, was explored at length by Wilson: in this work, steaming dungarees on a wash line; in others, smoking matchsticks, cigarettes, slices of watermelon are captured in striking verisimilitude and recorded with the exact timing of their insignificance - for example, Sunday. September 25. 7:46 PM. As this work illustrates, even in 1977, Wilson was challenging the boundaries of fine art; not only are the line of jeans notated as an event of historic importance, but the composition, medium and shaped support further tests the painted picture plane with the trompe-l'oeil stage curtains - tempting viewers to enter the amphitheater of the artist's mind and experience the acts.

  • Condition: **No signs of past restorations. Horizontal surface marks mid-center; surface marks lower center; surface abrasions lower edge on left; stretcher marks along lower edge; small "stars" scattered in black-painted areas are hand/intent of the artist; vertical surface mark lower left (pant leg).
