"I feel the space in Texas... it frees me. It connects me with the sky. It connects me with the earth." – Dorothy Hood

A native of Houston, Dorothy Hood received a traditional academic art education; she attended the Rhode Island School of Design and, briefly, the Art Students League in New York. Even as a young student, she knew her technique and approach were antithetical to the traditional training her instructors were espousing.

After a spontaneous trip to Mexico exposed her to the works of such artists as Rufino Tamayo, Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Remedio Varo, and Leonora Carrington - all of whom befriended the talented young American – she began to toy with the tenets of abstraction, expressionism, and color field. Hood was to spend two decades in Mexico, honing her skills and exploring a variety of styles and techniques, before returning to Texas. It was in her home state that she began to receive considerable attention and acclaim. The compositions she created upon her return, with her distinctive, often amorphous, swaths of bold color, are subtle and sophisticated explorations of form, texture, tone and the interplay of light and shadow. While the works themselves may inspire a range of emotions in the viewer, the artist's pleasure in the act of creation is often palpable.
