Early George III Sterling Silver Coffeepot

  • Condition: Overall Condition: Good. The lid is a possible later replacement or marriage. The finial has been professionally repaired, probably having been broken off at some point. Likewise, a rough area of silver solder on the underside of the foot suggests a possible repair. Otherwise, the piece seems to be in very good condition, with no condition issues beyond the expected signs of age. The handle is tight; and the lid hinge has slight give but is entirely sound. The repousse decoration is of later date as noted. Hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London leopard's head; 3) the date letter "L" for 1766-1767; and 4) the "S.W" maker's mark of Samuel Whitford. The lid interior is part-marked with the lion passant and a (date?) letter "W" (in script), suggesting it is not original.
