  • Provenance: Estate of Charles Christopher Soufas, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Notes: Chillida attended the architecture school of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid before moving to Paris to study art. Upon his return to Spain, he concentrated on creating large-scale sculptures which explored the relationship of volume, space and movement. In 1959, he began a series of etchings and lithographs which emphasized the importance of the "white" or blank space in creating a sense of tension when contrasted with the thick black lines of the ink. Chillida received numerous awards, including the Kandinsky Prize in 1960, the Carnegie Prize in 1964, and the Andrew W. Mellon Prize in 1978, which he shared with Willem de Kooning.
