Spectacular Egyptian Revival Carved Teakwood Throne Chair

ca. 1929, a faithful replica of King Tutankhamun's throne chair, one of two commissioned by American businessman Thomas Jefferson Penn and rendered by Elias Hatoun, Cairo, Egypt, with an inset back and arms, a parquetry seat and lion-form legs, the back side set with a series of stylized cobras.

  • Provenance: Thomas Jefferson Penn, Chinqua Penn Plantation, Reidsville, North Carolina.

    Note: In recognition of the anniversary of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. The mate to this chair was installed at the Harvard Museum of the Ancient Near East in 2022.
  • Condition: **In very good, sturdy condition. There is one small teardrop inlay missing at the upper left corner of the back. Slight shrinkage line to the seat with a small inlaid block missing. There is a 1-1/2" piece of the stringing inlay gone at the lower left corner of the back. Nice warm color and finish. The carving and details are incredible.
