  • Provenance: Notes: In 1885, Ellsworth Woodward moved to New Orleans and joined his brother William Woodward on the nascent art faculty at recently established Tulane University. A talented artist, Woodward studied at the Massachusetts Normal Art School, Rhode Island School of Design, and furthered his art education in Munch. When the Sophie H. Newcomb Memorial College for Women was established at Tulane University in 1886, Woodward became a professor of art and later the long- term and influential director of the art school.

Both Woodward brothers encouraged their students to draw inspiration from the local flora and fauna of the south for their paintings, prints, and pottery. In the painting of Spring: Daffodils and Agapanthus, Woodward filled his canvas with a view of the cascading flowers. Woodward would revisit this format in the painting Backyard in Covington with banana trees and branches heavy with oranges, now part of the Laura Nelson Simon Collection at The Historic New Orleans Collection.
  • Condition: **Surface dirt and toning of the varnish layer. Surface abrasions and losses along/by the left edge. Corresponding signs of inpainting along the left edge. Distortion of the canvas upper left.
Modern frame with surface marks, nicks and abrasions.
