Exceptional Large English Regency Convex Mirror, first quarter 19th century, intertwined dolphins support the leaf-molded and coved frame, set with a pair of two-light candle branches with period bronze candle cups, the crest depicting a verde antico-painted eagle holding a gilt spherule on a chain, resting on a lattice-molded plinth, h. 55-1/4", w. 47-1/2". Provenance: Robert Herman Antiques, New York, New York; Estates of Mary Dixon Montague and Frank D. Montague, Jr., Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

  • Condition: In very good "as found" condition. There is some restoration to the bottom drop, and the rocky plinth the dolphins rest on appears to have been reset, but is original. There are five short shrinkage cracks in the frame, one associated with an approximate 1" loss to the outer egg-and-dart molding. The frame has some later varnish and/or gold paint with a generous amount of original gilt peeking through. The black liner has some shrinkage cracks. The eagle has oxidized almost black, but was originally green. The mirror plate is possibly a replacement.
