Notes: A native of Nantes, Puigaudeau did not begin to paint in earnest until he returned from travels in Italy and Tunisia. Settling in the Breton village of Pont-Aven, he soon became ensconced in the local, vibrant art community which included such luminaries as Charles Laval, Paul Gauguin, Claude Monet, and Pierre August Renoir. With their emphasis on bold colors and strong light, the artists of the Pont-Aven School were progressive, popular and influential and amongst them were the future leaders of numerous significant art movements including Symbolism and Synthetism. Even within such an esteemed group of artists, the Impressionist Puigaudeau was acclaimed for his sun-drenched, luminous landscapes of the Breton countryside, which frequently incorporated figures and aspects of rural life. His technique was to carefully apply numerous layers of bold, bright colors with small, vigorous brushstrokes. The success of his style and approach is evidenced in the work offered here with its light-dappled trees and the shimmering golds and greens of the foliage flanking the lone, central figure. This painting was included in an exhibition held at the City Hall in Pont Aven entitled "Gauguin et ses Amis."
