Fine English Walnut Artist Model of an Equestrian

ca. 1830s, probably by C. Barbe, London, the horse and rider carved with incised features, fully articulated with flexible brass and wood ball joints, the horse with a segmented and movable mane, the figures mounted together on a later adjustable iron stand raised on a wood plinth.
overall h. 22"; horse h. with straight leg conformation 20", w. 20"; figure h. 15", w. 5"; plinth l. 16"

Provenance: Trevor Philip & Sons, Ltd., London, 1999; Private collection.

  • Condition: **In overall very good condition. The tip (~1/8") of the shoulder blade on the horse is lacking and there is a light crescent-shaped scratch on the barrel/side from friction with the retractable shoulder. The neck is slightly loose and does not hold all poses rigidly due to shrinkage around the ball joints. All articulated parts on horse and figure are in working order and move easily. Both exhibit old cosmetic scuffs and nicks from prior use as studio models. The wood plinth is a later replacement, and thus not marked. Condition issues are minor and as to be expected with age and utilitarian use.
