Fine Gorham Coin Silver Pitcher

mid-19th century, Providence, Rhode Island, retailed by J. W. Tucker & Co., San Francisco, the ovoid body decorated with repousse hibiscus on a starry matte ground, the scroll-mounted imbricate handle crested with a ram's masque, the cartouche engraved "B. F. Washington".
h. 12-3/4", l. 9", dia. 5-3/4"; 39.81 t. oz.

  • Provenance: Benjamin Franklin Washington (1820-1872) was the great-great-nephew of George Washington, a descendant of the patriot's brother Samuel. Born in Berry Hill in Jefferson County Virginia (now West Virginia), he studied law and assumed the family estates at the early age of 21, but was lured to the Pacific Coast by the Gold Rush, leading a contingent of young men from the Shenandoah Valley to California. He met with no success, but remained in Sacramento, working in the post office and elected Recorder in 1850. He purchased and operated the Times and Transcript newspaper for a few years before being appointed by James Buchanan as Collector of the Port of San Francisco in 1857. He purchased a ranch and returned to the practice of law in 1863, and in 1865 became editor of the San Franciso Examiner, from which he retired shortly before his death.
  • Condition: **In generally good, used condition with some minor issues. There is a dent, about 1-1/2" long, on the side at the top of the decorated area of the body (visible in the second detail photograph), with a small dimple next to it. Some other minor scattered bumps and dings, including a 1/4" shallow dent at the lower edge of the decorated area. The inscription is quite worn but still legible. Marked on the underside as illustrated in the fifth detail photograph.
