Fine Paul Storr Sterling Silver-Gilt Hot Water Urn

hallmarked London, 1830-1831, retailed by Storr & Mortimer, the lobed melon-form body with scrolling arched handles decorated with leaf-and-dart flanked laurel facing, with acanthus-mounted reeded tap with anthemion-crested scroll key and lion's-masque spout, the collar with engraved anthemion and applied beaded and leaf-and-dart banding, the tall cavetto-domed lid fluted and with toupee finial lifting for ventilation, the whole raised on three realistically detailed, anthemion-gartered haunched lion's paw feet above a cavetto-canted triangular plinth base centering a bowl-form burner, complete with the original billet chamber and cap, engraved on the body with the arms and the lid with the crest of Leveson-Gower quartering Gresham.
h. 16", w. 12-1/4", d. 14-1/2"; 142.97 t. oz.

  • Provenance: Note: The arms here are those of William Leveson-Gower (1806-1860) of Titsey, Surrey, son of William Leveson-Gower (1779-1851) and Katherine Maria Gresham (1770-1808).
  • Condition: **In overall very good condition. Gilding mellowed and somewhat pale but intact and likely original. Some oxidation in the recesses, visible in catalogue images. Shallow 1" linear dent on one lobe behind the left proper handle, and the burner foot ring is dented slightly out of round. 1-1/2" split on the billet chamber where the edge meets the collar. Otherwise, no issues noted beyond the expected patina of age and heat distortion to the billet chamber. No repairs noted. Armorial lightly worn. All elements, including retaining nuts, billet chamber, chamber cover and burner appear original. Body and plinth fully hallmarked on the underside; billet chamber, lid, carburetor and burner and burner lid all part marked (though the latter two pieces with "g" date mark of 1822-23; all the rest are "p" for 1830-1831). Tested and water-fast. An exceptional piece.
