Five Japanese Netsuke Nogaku Masks, Edo period (1615-1868)/Meiji period (1868-1912), 18th/19th century, including a carved and polychromed wood Karasu-Tengu with large eyes and protruding beak, h. 2-1/4", w. 1-1/2", a carved and polychromed Ebisu with a wide smile, h. 2-1/8", w. 1-1/2", a bronze depicting Shishiguchi, h. 2", w. 1-1/2", a celadon-glazed porcelain mask of an Oni, h. 1-1/2", w. 1-5/8", and a cluster of nine masks intricately carved in wood, dia. 1-1/2".

  • Condition: In overall good condition. Two polychromed wooden netsukes each exhibit some slight scuffing and scattered very minor losses to pigment. The bronze netsuke has some surface wear and patination. Fine details are still visible. The celadon netsuke has some slight darkening to the unglazed band on the back. The wooden netsuke depicting a cluster of masks has some light wear, particularly some light fading around the noses of each face. A small accretion that appears to be easily removable in the crevices of the hair on one mask. No breaks or evidence of restoration. All show light wear consistent with age, material and use.
