Collection of Five Palissy Ware Objects

fourth quarter 19th century, Portuguese or French, including a pair of covered ewers, the covers decorated with monkeys leaning on tree stumps, coiled serpents forming the handles, the bodies with molded leaves and buds, marked "M. Mafra, Caldas, Portugal", h. 16", dia. 6-3/4", a ewer decorated with moths, toads, salamanders and stag horn beetles, on a bed of moss, unmarked, h. 14-1/2", w. 6", d. 7", an unusual handled vase decorated with cowrie shells and moths on a bed of moss, unmarked, h. 11", dia. 5-1/2", Provenance: Vito Giallo, New York, New York, and an urn with serpent-form handles, the body decorated with moths and ivy, unmarked, h. 8-3/4", w. 7-1/4", d. 4-1/4".

  • Provenance: Estate of Ann and Howard Barnett, New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • Condition: **PAIR COVERED EWERS: Both covers held in place with lead discs suspended from knotted twine and looped through the cover interiors. The monkeys are leaning against the tree stump-spout. One cover edge with restoration and losses to the edges (now touched up). Both with minor scuffs and dings along the top rim edge. The other with a crack across the tail at the shoulder.
    PITCHER: Lizard handle with a restored break at the neck; the spout with an old restored break across; the lizard at center restored at the neck, its feet with small firing racks. The foot restored all around the inverted portion and a spider hairline to the recessed center underneath. The extensive moss ground with typical scattered minor nicks and dings.
    HANDLED VASE: Both snake handles with scattered old restorations. One cowrie shell with a small loss.
    URN: Serpent handles on one side with an old restoration at the top curve. Both paired serpents with small restorations scattered about and losses to the tail ends of two with glaze cracks in that area; the foot with a minor flake underneath the perimeter; the upper rim with two 1/2" cracks through the guilloche edge.
