Follower of Thomas Gainsborough
(British, 1727-1788)

"Portrait of a Beauty with Golden Curls", fourth quarter 18th century

oil on canvas
unsigned, a partial old "Camberley & Yorktown/Surrey" label en verso.
Presented in an antique gessoed and giltwood frame.
26" x 22-1/2", framed 36" x 32"

Provenance: Deaccessioned from Friends University, Wichita, Kansas; gifted to the University by the Sam and Rie Bloomfield Foundation, Newport Beach, California.

  • Condition: **In overall good condition. The painting exhibits a few campaigns of conservative restoration that are commensurate with age and medium: it has been restretched, repaired, cleaned, and it has been revarnished several times, which makes it difficult for UV light to fully penetrate the surface. Areas of inpainting are present in the upper right, upper left and lower right corners and edges of the canvas. Minor inpainted "touch-ups" are scattered throughout the background and to the top of the head. The figure and face are intact. There are two small, older wax patched repairs en verso that correspond en recto with the top of the woman's head and to the upper right background. Fine craquelure is scattered throughout.
