Four Chinese Graduated Red Lacquer Boxes

first quarter 20th century, each decorated with delicate hand-painted black penwork.
h. 5-1/2" to 9", dia. 4-1/4" to 8-1/4"

  • Provenance: The Estate of The Honorable Lloyd & Beryl Ann Bentsen.
  • Condition: **The four woven lacquered baskets are in overall good estate condition. Because of the material which expands and shrinks with time, the two larger baskets have some buckling to their covers, which has caused some cracking of the lacquer - the larger one has some overpainted repairs to a few top cracks and a few cracks to the inside base. The smaller of the two larger examples has an ~2" loss of lacquer to one edge, leaving weave exposed and some cracks to the side. The smallest basket has some vertical cracks to lacquer. All baskets have some small scattered flakes/losses to lacquer along edges and some surface soiling.
