Four George III Sterling Silver Candlesticks

  • Condition: Overall Condition: Good. No dents, breaks, splits or repairs noted. Light scuffs and dings consistent with age. Wear to the details in relief throughout, but most notably the masques on the nozzle, the "drapery" and "swags" and the nude female figures on the base. Plaster-filled with wooden bases (one base lacking and revealing the plaster interior). Engraved (at the bottom of the standard) with a crest of a lion, sejeant, affronte holding a lozenge. Each hallmarked (on the basal edge) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the Sheffield crown, 3) the date letter "S" for 1777-1778; and 4) the "IW & Co." maker's mark of John Winter and Co. Bobeches part-marked on the sleeve with the lion passant and maker's mark. Marks are very good, clean and clear, with the exception of a partially rubbed maker's mark on one candlestick. In all, a very nice and complete set with no condition issues beyond the wear to the details from two centuries of polishing.
