Four-Piece 19th C. Philadelphia Sterling Tea Set

  • Condition: Overall Condition: Good. The finial on the teapot has been professionally repaired; as a result, the lid is not as well-oxidized as the rest of the set and is noticeably lighter in color. (This will remedy itself over time). The ivory insulators are a little loose, and the inside upper retaining pin on the coffeepot is lacking. There is a thumbprint-sized dent on the creamer body near the handle, and a smaller one on the opposing side. The coffeepot also has a small 3/8" circular dent on the body halfway between the lower edge of the cartouche and the lower handle mount. Excellent detail and chasing. Each piece marked (on the underside of the body, inside the foot) with "Bailey & Co. / [pattern number 135 or 136] / Chestnut St. Phila." above a pair of lions passant and the Bailey "lion-S-shield" sterling mark; the lions are repeated near the outer underside edges of the foot. The pattern number and address are lacking on the smaller available area of the cream jug, but there is no doubt that this set is all of contemporaneous manufacture. All marks clean and legible. In all, a beautifully decorated set with minor condition issues commensurate with its age.
