French First Standard (.950) Silver-Mounted Glass Six-Piece Cordial Set, fourth quarter 19th century, by Maison Odiot, Paris, comprising a decanter, h. 7", dia. 3-3/4", and five cordials, h. 2-1/4", dia. 1-1/2", the decanter with spherical glass body with tall slender neck, mounted with a finely chased silver rocaille collar and foot joined by an acanthus-scroll handle, with fitted gadrooned cap, the cordials en suite.

  • Condition: Overall Condition: Good. Light surface wear consistent with age and use, but no dents, breaks or repairs to the silver noted. There are light traces of gilding indicating that the set was originally at least partial-gilt. Glass elements generally very good, with one or two very light surface scratches, but no visible chips or frits. The decanter body does have two half-moon-shaped chips on the underside, each about 1/2" long; that one of these is filled with plaster, and that two other anomalous notches are similarly filled, suggest that the glass is a later replacement. Each piece marked with the French first standard "Minerva" head in use 1838-1972, and the "O/Roman lamp" maker's mark of Maison Odiot (two cordials lacking the maker's mark). The detachable decanter lid has the minimum "boar's head" guaranty mark but no maker's mark; and the marked cordials are additionally stamped "Odiot / a Paris".
