French Empire Gilt-Bronze Mantel Clock, first quarter 19th century, depicting Numa Pompilius, the second King of Rome, on engine-turned feet, the bas-relief plaque on the base depicting an event in his life, the clockworks set with an engine-turned dial, set in a central box, decorated on the top with trophies of war, a caduceus, a helmet and a patinated bronze lamp, a figure of Numa carrying a scroll inscribed with his name on the right, and several staffs, including one marked "SPQR", a symbol for Rome, on the left, set with a silk-string suspension movement, h. 15-1/2", w. 11-3/4", d. 3-3/4".


  • Condition: Retaining a rich gilded surface in excellent condition and works which appear to be clean and original. There is a semicircular indentation on the top and a slight dent in one corner. There are no damaged or obviously missing elements. Some slight gilt loss to left front foot.
