French Empire Silver Drageoir

1803-1809, Paris, by Gabriel Jacques Andre Bompart (1770-1846), first standard (.950) silver, of campana form, the openwork body decorated with plaques of Diana and Juno separated by anthemion, with anthemion banding above and ovolo banding below, with swan-form handles above a pedestal foot with leaf-and-dart banding above an openwork plinth base with mascarons and cornucopia, all above winged lion's paw feet, the fitted and domed lid with swan finial, the glass liner lacking.
h. 9", w. 6-1/4"; 26.10 t. oz.

  • Condition: **In generally good condition with some minor issues. One foot is dented slightly upwards, with the lower edge of the plinth above dented likewise (visible in third online image). The lid also has two dents on the rim and three small dings, with several dents and ripples on the sleeve with the result that it does not sit completely flush. The wingtips of the swan finial are folded over, but this appears to be original. No breaks or losses to the openwork banding. Surprisingly sturdy and heavy gauge. Liner lacking as noted. A good period Empire piece.
