French Louis XIV-Style Gilt-Bronze, Mahogany and Kingwood Tall Case Clock

fourth quarter 19th century, the hood with a circular glazed face supported and surmounted by gilt-bronze putti frolicking in the clouds, the tapering case lushly adorned with gilt-bronze mounts including a masque of Apollo Soleil (the symbol of Louis XIV) on the frieze, an urn, lyre, floral swags and scrolling anthemion on the body, acanthus crests on the corners and raised on four acanthus-crested lion's paw feet, above a platform base en suite, the dial marked "Balthazar a Paris", the works marked "Elite".

  • Condition: **In overall good condition. There have been some repairs done to the case over the years with small areas of filler. Minor shrinkage cracks consistent with age. No sign of losses or missing elements. Light wear to the gilding on the bronze mounts. The suspension spring which holds the pendulum is broken and needs to be replaced. The spring-wound movement is signed "Elliot". Pendulum, winding key and door key are all present.
