French Patinated Bronze of the "Crouching Venus"

ca. 1900, an "F. Barbedienne, Fondeur" inscription along edge of base, after the 2nd century AD Roman marble (itself a copy of a 2nd century BCE sculpture).
h. 24", w. 12", d. 13"

Literature: Reference: Haskell, Francis and Penny, Nicholas. Taste and the Antique - the Lure of Classical Sculpture, New Haven: Yale University Press, 1981.

Notes: The Crouching Venus is unusual for the number of period versions conserved in such collections as the Uffizi, the Louvre, the British Museum, and the Vatican Museum. The bronze offered here, with the fingers of the right hand slightly outstretched, most closely resembles the sculpture in the Vatican collection.
