  • Provenance: Notes: After the death of his father, George Henry Clements' mother moved him and his three brothers to her family home in New Orleans. Soon after, Clements developed a friendship with the writer George W. Cable, as they shared an interest in Louisiana's creole culture and were fervently opposed to the oppressive Jim Crow laws of the time.

After studying at the Art Student League in New York and the Academie Julian in Paris, Clements gained recognition for his watercolors, particularly scenes of everyday life. In a review from the New York Water Color Club of a 1901 exhibition, Charles Caffin singled out Clements' work, writing, "The painter has enjoyed the scene and made a vivid, brief, suggestive record; a trivial one often, but still honestly unaffected."
