George II Sterling Silver Coffeepot

hallmarked London, 1741-1742, by John Swift (ca. 1704-1766; free 1725), tapered baluster form, with hinged, flat-domed lid, toupie finial, acanthus-mounted "gooseneck" spout and crested double-scroll wooden handle, decorated with flat-chased rococo bands centering the arms of the widow de Nevile.

  • Condition: **In overall good condition, with no breaks or repairs noted. There is a moderate compression dent around the top of the spout base where it joins the body. There is a 3/4" dent on the perimeter of foot where it is flattened out-of-round. The wooden handle is a later replacement; the flat-chased decoration is a later addition. Hallmarked (on the body, near the rim) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; and 3) the date letter "f" for 1741-1742, and (on the underside) 4) the "JS" black letter maker's mark of John Swift. The underside additionally marked with original scratch weight "ou: 19 / dn: 07".
