George II Sterling Silver Inkstand

hallmarked London, 1751-1752, by Edward Feline I (ca. 1685-1753; free 1721), of shaped rectangular form with gadrooned rim, the central plateau fitted with ink, water and pounce pots with detachable lids and flanked by pen trays, the whole raised on four scrolling acanthus feet.
h. 3", l. 11-1/2", w. 7-1/2"; 33.78 t. oz.

  • Condition: **In generally good condition, with some wear to the detail of the gadrooned rim, especially at the projecting ends, but no breaks or repairs noted. Concentric scratches on the underside around the six retaining nuts (three lacking) of the three wells (each with two bolts, some replaced). Removing all three wells shows that they are additions hallmarked London, 1762-1763, by Robert Peaston (although only one retains a full set of legible marks, the others with more wear). The body is hallmarked on the underside with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "q" for 1751-1752; and 4) the "EF" maker's mark of Edward Feline I, all quite clear and legible. The detachable well caps are unmarked. The underside is additionally engraved with an owner's inventory number.
