George II Sterling Silver Tankard, hallmarked London, 1738-1739, by Richard Bayley (1683-1754; free 1706), of traditional slightly tapering cylindrical form with annular band, step-domed hinged lid, "Onslow"-scroll billet and "S"-scroll handle with heart terminal, the underside with a later presentation inscription dated 1941, h. 6-7/8", l. 7", dia. 5", 23.19 t. oz.

  • Condition: Overall Condition: Good. Scattered bumps, scuffs and pinpoint dings consistent with age. Fingerprint-sized dent on the crest of the handle, and a 3/4" dent on the rim of the lid. The lid hinge slightly bent causing the front of the lid to sit about 1/8" above the rim. Large ring of silver solder around the underside circumference of the bottom, perhaps a repair but possibly original. Period monogram on the handle "P/I+A"; later inscription on the underside "William Russell Grace Byers from his Grandfather Byers June 3rd 1941". Hallmarked (on the body, near the rim and on the top of the lid) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "C" for 1738-1739; and 4) the "RB" maker's mark of Richard Bayley. Marks rubbed, particularly those on the lid and the date letter on the body.
