George II-Style Giltwood Torchere, ca. 1900, English or Continental, the bombe base resting on paw feet and ornamented with angel's heads, the tapered pedestal with fluting and carved laurel swags under Ionic capitals, the top in the form of a reeded urn trimmed with carved leaves, h. 61-1/2", dia. 11".


  • Condition: In overall good condition retaining its original gilt surface with rubbing, wear, and surface losses exposing the underlying gesso throughout. The piece exhibits normal wear, abrasions and shrinkage. The flat top surface shows indications of past gilt loss and has been painted gold. There are indications of past re-gluing at lamination lines where pieces of wood were originally glued together. Presently, a section of the top is loose at such a seam, as is the tip of one scroll just beneath the top.
