George II Three-Piece Sterling Tea Caddy Set

  • Condition: Overall Condition: Good. The sugar bowl sits at a very slight rearward tilt (about 3 degrees) owing to a near-imperceptible compression dent where the foot joins the body. The lid has a tiny 1/6" break at lower edge. One of the tea caddies has a similar slight compression dent, sitting at a 5 degree tilt; the same caddy has a very light 5/16" dent lower left of the armorial. The other caddy has two shallow 1/2" "fingerprint" dents on and next to the armorial, both well concealed by the engraving and repousse work, and a 1/4" shallow dent lower left of the armorial. Excellent detail and engraving. Each piece hallmarked (the caddies on the underside, the sugar bowl on the sleeve): with 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "f" for 1741-1742; and 4) the "CH" maker's mark of Christian Hillan. Marks generally good, though the maker's mark on both caddies is very worn; see online and catalogue illustration for the mark on the sugar bowl. Each piece also inscribed on the underside "Mae C. Plant / 1917". A fine and rare set with only minor condition issues associated with age and use.
