George III Bateman Family Sterling Silver Water Pitcher, hallmarked London, 1802-1803, by Peter, Anne and William Bateman, of baluster form, decorated with later repousse flower baskets and rococo scrolls centering a cartouche en suite, with gadrooned rim, the handle a later replacement hallmarked 1966, engraved on the cartouche with a crest of a stag's head erased, h. 13", dia. 5-3/4", l. 7-1/2", 36.57 t. oz.

  • Condition: The upper insulator of the handle is cracked, with about a third of it missing. There is some "give" and, although functional, should be repaired. The handle itself is a later replacement; the insulators probably are as well. Slight vertical hairline fissure, about 1-1/2" long, which does not extend to the interior, on one side of the body near the neck. Otherwise in quite good condition, with no dents, breaks or repairs noted; solid and level. Well-detailed later Victorian decoration. Hallmarked (on the body, near the rim) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "G" for 1802-1803; 4) the George III bust duty mark; and 5) the PB/AB/WB maker's marks of Peter, Anne and William Bateman. Marks rubbed but discernible (the aforementioned fissure running directly through the date letter).
