George III Mahogany Butler's Secretary, fourth quarter 18th century, the rectangular top with a molded edge, above a case fitted with two drawers over a drop-front secretary drawer, faced with two banded oval panels and opening to a variety of drawers and cubbyholes centered by an urn-inlaid cupboard door, over two banded and circular paneled doors opening to pull-out shelves, raised on bracket feet, h. 48", w. 51", d. 24-1/2".

  • Condition: In overall good condition. The case appears tight and stable. Nicely polished with normal mars, abrasions and dings consistent with age and use. The top exhibits two filled shrinkage cracks. No movement at the cracks when the area is pressed on. There is a filled veneer loss at one front corner, about 3" x 3/8". Brasses replaced. There is a vertical veneer tear in one of the end oval panels, due to movement at underlying seam. On the edge of the case, a few inches below that is a veneer chip about 3/4" x 1/4". Repairs to inlay at corners of drawers. One door panel is slightly warped at its edge. It appears firmly mounted to the cabinet.
