George III Mahogany Secretary

fourth quarter 18th century, the dentillated broken swan's-neck cornice above a like frieze over two doors, each inset with a mirrored panel and opening to a shelved interior, the lower section fitted with a slant front opening to a variety of drawers and cubbyholes, centering a cupboard door over four graduated long drawers, raised on bracket feet.
h. 91", w. 42", d. 22-1/2"

Provenance: Private collection, Nashville, Tennessee.

  • Condition: **In very good polished and restored condition. The piece exhibits normal shrinkage, abrasions, mars and scuffs to the feet consistent with age and use.

The finial from the cornice is missing.

The mirror plates are somewhat foggy. They may be antique mercury glass.

The lower case exhibits some side-to-side movement at its glue joints.

Locks are present; no keys. There is a brass plate added to the frame around the slant lid at the point where the lid's lock throws caused wear or a loss.

Drawers pulls re-drilled and replaced. They appear to be antique.

Each side exhibits a tight vertical shrinkage crack that has been filled.
