George III Northumbrian Sterling Silver Coffeepot

hallmarked Newcastle, 1784-1785, by Laglands & Robertson, the pear-shaped body decorated with engraved and bright-cut banding at the collar, with palmette-mounted "gooseneck" spout and crested wooden handle, steeply domed hinged lid with urn-form finial, and circular pedestal foot with gadrooned banding.
h. 13-1/2", l. 8-1/2", dia. 4-3/4"; 27.37 t. oz. (including wooden handle)

  • Condition: **In generally good condition, with a nice patina. The lid has a professional repair where the hinge is attached, undetectable on the outside but there is evidence of expertly executed silver solder on the underside. The handle is likely a later replacement. Small 1/4" casting flaw near the base of the spout. Hallmarked (on underside within the foot) with: 1) the Newcastle towers; 2) the sterling lion passant; 3) the crowned Leopard's head; 4) the date letter "S" for 1784-1785; and 5) the "IL/IR" maker's mark of Laglands & Roberts; the date letter and lion passant nearly obliterated by the later attachment of the foot, but all are legible.
