George III Sterling Silver Cake Basket

hallmarked London, 1786-1787, by William Plummer (ca. 1739-1791; free 1755), of navette form, with reeded edge and reticulated banding on the rim and bottom enhanced by bright-cutting and wrigglework, quartered by applied trefoils and wheat stalk medallions, with reeded swing handle and raised on an oval foot-ring reticulated en suite, monogrammed "GS".
h. 4-1/2" (11" with handle), l. 13-3/4", w. 10"; 23.12 t. oz.

  • Condition: **One narrow end of the interior basket has some ripples and a faint ridge where it joins the foot ring, indicating a compression dent that has been repaired. Dark oxidation surrounds the applied wheat-stalk medallions, which have probably been added, one to conceal the aforementioned repair, the others to balance the design. Scattered bumps and scuffs commensurate with age and use. The handle hinges are secure, swinging freely but standing upright. Hallmarked (on the rim) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "l" for 1786-1787; 4) the George III bust duty mark; and 5) the "WP" maker's mark of William Plummer. Marks very good.
