George III Sterling Silver Cake Basket

hallmarked London, 1766-1767, by Edward Aldridge II, of oval form, the everted sides with reticulated panels separated by wavy gadroons, with openwork bead-and-shell rim, the double "C"-scroll-mounted swing handle en suite, raised on an openwork acanthus scroll foot ring.

  • Condition: **In generally good condition, with scattered surface wear commensurate with age and use, but no dents or breaks noted. Two small areas of repair to the reticulation, one on each of the short ends, professionally done and not noticeable from the upper side. Two areas of repair on the handle arch where a 6" segment was broken off, now reattached and reinforced with 1" and 1-7/8" oval silver braces on the underside. Handle swings freely and the hinges tight enough for it to stand upright. Hallmarked (on the rim, near one handle) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "L" for 1766-1767; and 4) the "E.A" maker's mark of Edward Aldridge II.
