George III Sterling Silver Covered Cup

hallmarked London, 1797, by John Schofield (fl. 1776-1799), the ovoid body with gadrooned calyx and arched, acanthus-mounted handles, the tall, waisted fitted lid with gadrooned toupie finial, the whole raised on a waisted pedestal foot above a square plinth, engraved on the body with the arms of Browne impaling Graham quartering Burninghill.
h. 14", w. 9-1/2", dia. 5-1/2"; 39.01 t. oz.

  • Condition: **A few shallow dents, including a 3/4" one above the gadrooning on one side, and a thumbprint dent on the gadrooning on the opposite side, the rest negligible. Nice patina. Attractive engraved armorial, lightly worn (moreso on one side) but not obscuring the hatching. Hallmarked (on the edge of the plinth) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the George III bust duty mark; 4) the date letter "B" for 1797-1798; and 5) the "IS" maker's mark of John Schofield; marks good, the maker's mark slightly worn. The lid part-marked on the sleeve with all but the leopard's head; these marks very good.
