George III Sterling Silver Inkstand

hallmarked London, 1775-1776, by Richard Meach, of oval form and raised on four triangular openwork scroll feet, fitted with three galleried receptacles with silver-capped cut glass wells (ink, water and pounce) between two pen trays, the whole decorated with beaded banding.
h. 3-3/4", w. 19-1/4", l. 12-1/4"; 25.51 t. oz. (excluding glass wells)

  • Condition: **In overall good condition, with no dents, breaks or repairs noted on the stand. The pounce well is a later replacement, larger and with the cap part-marked London, 1792-1793 by Peter & Ann Bateman; it has a small chip on the underside. The other two wells are probably original, but the caps are not hallmarked; both in good condition. (Note that all the wells are a little cloudy and need to be cleaned.) The stand hallmarked on the underside with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London leopard's head; 3) the date letter "U" for 1775-1776; and 4) the "RM" maker's mark of Robert Leach. Marks very good, but note that the lion passant is clipped on the top by the hole made to receive one of the well receptacles (which are all part-marked with the lion passant).
