George III Sterling Silver Waiter hallmarked London, 1783-1874, by Daniel Smith and Robert Sharp, of circular form, with beaded rim and three fluted feet, engraved with the arms of Earl Fortescue, the underside with later 25th anniversary inscription with the names of fourteen couples arranged in concentric rings centering the date "1912 - January 17th - 1937", dia. 10", 19.25 t. oz. The arms here are probably those of Hugh Fortescue (1753-1841) who was created Earl Fortescue in 1789. As this piece pre-dates his elevation to the peerage, it lacks the comital crown.

  • Condition: Overall Condition: Good. There is a 1-3/4" shallow dent on the rim (at about 5 o'clock), making it slightly out of round. There is a large but shallow assay scratch on the underside. Otherwise no condition issues noted beyond the expected wear and scuffs consistent with age. Nice engraving on the arms. Hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "h" for 1783-1784; and 4) the "DS/RS" maker's mark of Smith & Sharp. Marks excellent.
