George III-Style Mahogany Breakfront Bookcase, mid-19th century, the molded cornice above a drop finial-carved frieze, over a case fitted with four astragal-glazed doors, the lower section with a banded top over three drawers and four cupboard doors, all inset with an oval panel, raised on a plinth base, h. 95-1/2", w. 65", d. 19".

  • Condition: Structurally sound with a good finish. Minor rubbing to some mullions. Minor rubbing to center left door edge, and corresponding center right door edge. There are repairs to rear one-inch back edge on lower cabinet on both sides. Slightly darker on left side, and on right. One inch of mid-molding is loose, but only needs gluing. Minor looseness to top edge of molding, primarily needing re-gluing. Far left pull is missing one post - the handle is in the drawer. Primarily solid mahogany, but drawer fronts and doors are veneered, as they are on all high-quality breakfronts, both period and later. The play of wood grain, which is a highlight of the period, is impossible to achieve with solid wood.
