George III Walnut and Burl Bureau, fourth quarter 18th century, the banded rectangular top above a like slant front opening to an inset leather writing surface, a lidded storage well and a variety of drawers and cubbyholes flanking a central arched panel cupboard opening to three drawers, over two short drawers and two graduated long drawers, all banded, raised on bracket feet, h. 40", w. 36-1/2", d. 20-1/2". Provenance: Royal Antiques, New Orleans, Louisiana.


  • Condition: Structurally sound and usable with good working drawers and old mellow surface. Shrinkage cracks overall to the edges of veneered surface, commensurate with age. Scattered minor losses to the chevron pattern veneer on the top, and some missing and restored beading to the edge of the top. Minor shrinkage crack to the top, on the right. Brasses have been moved and replaced. Losses and repairs to the beading and veneer on the left front side and base. Veneer repairs, shrinkage and old beetle damage to sides. The feet are old replacements. On the interior, hinges are reset and replaced. The surface has minor dents commensurate with age. The leather inset on top is a replacement. Many old ink stains on surfaces.
